Within the calm and peace buzzes a workforce, a partnership between the past and the present, the people and the technology, the traditions and the breakthroughs. You can hear the rhythm of rum the minute you walk in. Giant oak vats stand alongside traditional barrels as though conversations between times never cease. Sleek machines engage with the human touch that takes you back to what was good about beginnings and where it has brought us today. It stands as a marker of history, of humble beginnings that was set to become what it is today- an exemplary distillery, leading the way then and leading the way now.
It was in 1959 that the city of Kathmandu became home to Nepal Distillery Pvt. Ltd- one of the first distilleries established in Nepal's organised sector. In the late 1950s, Mr. J. R. Contractor tapped into what were some of the most ideal conditions to make a distinct, quality rum-the fresh spring waters of the valley and its cool temperature.
These were some of the gifts of the valley unique unto itself, to the making of a classic rum. The pure and fresh waters is essential to the quality of rum, and the ideal climate of cool temperatures facilitates a slower aging, giving you a very nuanced flavour that speaks of the beauty of time.
What began with traditional pot stills of the late 1800s has now transformed into a modern 3 column distillation plant and specialised wooden vats of oak for maturation , all in the service of a unique blend of a rum you won't find anywhere else. We have evolved from the classic wooden oak barrels to the the giant oak casks that facilitates the aging of a blend, giving you deep and beautifully integrated flavours. In fact, our well kept aged blends that have matured longer than the others runs through our special batches of rum that is known for its distinctly soft, smooth and mellow flavour. And the best part is, the blend that started it all then, with its subtlety and complexity aided by the historic pot stills, is still what makes our rum one of a kind, today.
The distillery has been indebted to a community dedicated to providing a classic experience of rum. It began that way, and the tradition still lasts where the changing technologies of making rum is woven with the passion of generations of rum makers.
